It occurs to me I haven't given my opinion

Right. Let's start off with the werehog... he was epic! I loved how he was seeing and hearing things wrong and let me say... THIS is how he should've been in the game. I much prefer him to have some issues with his sanity than to have his entire personaility the same

Next... Thunderbolt. I'll be honest. I DID see this coming. I had found a darkened image of what Thunderbolt really looked like earlier and I could see she was going to be a small Mobian (but I thought she was going to be a tiny bunny, not a chinchilla). So no real disappointment there. My disappointment was that she was defeated so easily and they made a joke out of her being chased. The only consolidation was she is a Pikachu chinchilla so she wasn't totally helpless outside her suit

The story itself: Could have been better but it was still absolutely not a disappointment to me. I loved it! Keep it up!

The backup: I have to say, I loled at Sonic's reaction to the zen garden, especially considering what he was like with Moss the last issue. And with the rest of the story... uh... I guess sometimes it's good to just defeat the badnik in like 2 seconds. But wish I had seen more of the exciting stuff

Overall. Very pleased. Hope the upcoming ones are as good or better

Hmmm, I seem to be the only one who didn't like it.... was I in a bad mood when I read it or something? :P

Comics aren't to everyone's tastes. As I know you know, I'm pretty fond of the werehog so... yeah. I'm kinda more likely to like this arc for less reasoning ;)

I'm with Dylan on this one, since I actually have Unleashed and I kind of like playing the Werehog. if I'm in the mood. :P

Have to say I do like the were-hog to! Certainly that wasn't a reason for me not to like it.

Show me more covers!

StH_269_Regular.jpgStH_269_Variant.jpg

The contestants are brawlin' and the saga continues in 'Champions' Part Two! The fighting tournament for the Chaos Emerald is in full swing! Tails vs. Honey! Espio vs. Bean! Knuckles vs. Bark! But it's a sure bet that if a competition's going down, something's fixed with thugs like Breezie and Nack involved. Sonic will need some inside info - and he finds it from some surprisingly familiar faces! Featuring new cover art from Jammin' Jamal Peppers and a SWE (Sonic Wrestling Entertainment) variant cover by the indomitable T.REX!

The contestants are up! Tails VS Honey? We get her definitely at last. Woo! Don't remember if this was confirmed last issue so meh. Espio vs Bean? My 3rd and 1st favourite characters battling! Should be interesting (You better win Bean). Knuckles VS Bark. Brawn vs Brawn. Nice. Annnnnnnnnnnnnd Breezie and Nack in there somewhere. Pretty sure Nack will be fighting, knowing the Sonic Fighters game, but Breezie? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Oh. and covers. The main cover... Sonic's face... yeah...

The Variant! Eggman looks like he's in a variant of his original costume. Heh. He should've gone as El Gran Gordo (Sonic X comic for those who don't know)

I'm pretty sure for the cover of the issue 270 we will have Honey or Knuckles who face to Sonic.

I loved issue 265 especially the Werehog, it ws a side to Sonic that I have never seen before! I sorta wished the game could've been like that too but I still love Werehog levels. (Even if they are difficult!)

Might as well give my thoughts on Issue #265 while it's still relevant:

That opening with the Werehog is certainly a marvel to see. I loved how reluctant and scared Thunderbolt's henchmen looked when they were being told to attack. (It's like they knew that they had no chance against him!) And then we see Thunderbolt proper... she definately seems to me like an 'all-talk-no-bite' kind of villain, which I don't think is too bad. (Though I think the neck-fur could've been a more... white-ish colour, perhaps?) Anyway, after seeing Thunderbolt's... Shock Wave, I guess (it's not very effective), we get what is probably the highlight of the issue for me. No, not Mighty vs. Werehog (though it was decent), I'm talking about the 'Werehog-Vision'! (If you have a better name for it, let me know.) It was, in a way, like a breath of fresh air, and an intereting twist for this version of the Werehog.

Having Sonic get his judgement clouded by Dark Gaia energy is certainly more intriguing to me than the game's simple handwave of "Sonic has the willpower to not be corrupted one bit". I liked seeing Sally strategize on how to stop Sonic's rampage, and the brief flashbacks to SA1 and their (new) origins was cool too. Sonic finally coming to his senses and realising the damage that he (and Mighty) caused was a decently touching moment, I thought. And finally, I think Sonic's decision to stay and learn to control the Werehog is gonna be a nice change of pace, with the Freedom Fighters going without him. But this issue still felt a little too short...

...Oh, hello there, bad backup #2. Yep, I'm gonna end up being a Nega-tive Nancy again; I didn't enjoy this backup either. The fact that it's set before 'Waves of Change' didn't help, but it all just felt so... meaningless (until maybe the very end). Okay, so we learn about a few places on the Sky Patrol, but aside from the Medical Bay, I don't see these places being explored again. And Mecha Rot--er, I mean 'War Walrus' seems like he might be--oh, never mind. It's already destroyed. (Sheesh, where's Silver Sonic when you need it, huh?) I'll admit I kinda liked the references in the Sky Patrol's weapons (namely Sonic X's 'Sonic Power Cannon'), but again, the whole backup felt pointless to me... unless that Tails Doll at the end plays a key factor in the next arc, in which case this was just boring.

So yeah, pretty much the same results as the last issue; great main story, pointless/just bad backup. Hopefully, 'Ambushed' won't fall into this trap.

So the newest issues' up....

And.... let's be honest, not much happened. This is another set-up issue. However, it was still an enjoyable read, and it was interesting to see Moss is way more active than you'd give him credit for.

Though, I wonder if Sonic got control of being a were-hog too quickly. Though, it's not full control as can be seen from that howl. He might lose it when the zappy robot comes to call. Gotta say, I do kinda want to see a werehog vs knux fight at some point.

And as for Sally.... Sally, Sally, Sally... you kept saying 'it could be a trap', 'its probibly a trap'. So if you don't have some backup plan, probibly involving Team Fighters, which DOESN'T include them acting on their own initiative, you might wanna think about giving up the leadership position until the writers remember you're meant to be a tactical genius! Or it could be, by her dialog, that's what the writers are after.

Artwise, something I don't usually comment on, but.... there were-hog looked.... wrong somehow. The face looked kinda goofy, except in the transformation panel.

Okay. So let's split this into 3 parts because that's what I found with this issue

There was the werehog bit which had Sonic training a bit in the day. Clearly irritated by the Zen stuff in the beginning but seems to get past it before the issue ends... wait. This is Sonic we're talking about? That was fast. Expected it to take longer. Even with Mighty and Ray there for encouragement. Anyway, then he did his werehog transformation... which disappointed me really. He's gotten past it really quick. *Sighs* Guess I should've expected it. And he looked kind of odd when he was smiling. Anyway, I could rant about it more but I won't.

Oh. And Moss was... more than I expected that was good. Mighty is... calm Mighty. Good. Ray is ... fun. Good. Yep

PART 2! Eggman and Thunderbolt

Right. Now. I've done Geography. And I'm pretty certain that Solar energy does not give more power out than coal, oil or gas. But perhaps it depends on the weather where he is. Plus Eggman's technology s beyond what we have now so meh. Right. Dark Gaia's energy is super powerful and Eggman is out to get it... alright... fair enough. Good luck

Thunderbolt got a telling off for failing. I guessed that would happen... what I didn't expect is she would return with a thirst for vengance so quick. Is she going to be a fairly recurring villain here? Possibly. Is there much more to see of her? I don't know. I guess we'll see

PART 3! The other Freedom fighters

Yes of course it's a trap Sally. Eggman may be crazy but he's not stupid. And if you knew it was a trap why were you not prepared? You need to be prepared for everything in this? You can't rely off luck all the time... *Sighs* Anyway. More E-series robots that look less dangerous than his original ones. Sure they may be more specialised ... maybe... but I think they could still look a little more dangerous than that. Eta looked better than they did! And he's new too!

Overall... it could be better and more could've happened. Despite my complaints I still didn't find it an awful issue but here's hoping next one will be an improvement

There was so many things wrong with this issue the artwork was not that great and it show on the werehog it seem as if he had less time to draw.

Second sally oh sally oh sally if you knew it was a trap why didn't you plan a backup plan just in case.

Third what`s up with those E-Series Robot the original one and omega look more treating then these newer one I think they were running out of idea`s because one of them was a bird.

This was one big disappointment since nothing really happen, the artwork was not all that great but who know maybe the next issue will be better.

The artwork doesn't really bother me. The way I look at it is they had the reboot and simplified things, so the artwork is following suit. And to a point, the story is too. Things could be left out/altered/or at least sped up some. But let's face it, it could have been worse. They could have dragged out the Werehog-Jedi training for another 6 issues like they did the reveal.

I love Sonics reaction to the sun set, he was so scared and I absolutley loved it. It shows how worried he is about his 'other self.' Another thing that wouldv'e been great to see in the game. If only...

I wouldv'e loved to see a full page transformation but it was good nonetheless.

However... Sally... luck doesn't always solve your problems. Be prepared at least.

...Well, it's been a while since I've reviewed an issue of the main series.

My reaction:

meh.jpg

I'm not a good judge when it comes to Artistic design. But I can say I do like the cover of this one, ...or rather, I like what they were trying to do with it. Thing is, when you're making a side-by-side half-shot of two separate characters or two sides of the same character, you have to put symmetry and comparison into consideration.

For example: Sonic_unleashed_boxart.jpg

Notice how in the box art, the same thing is the case, but the background is also split symmetrically in half to symbolize both sides. Granted, it IS optional. But it seems like that's what they were going for with this cover, and it actually might have worked, if it wasn't for the placement of Antoine. Eggman makes sense, and heck, Moss actually makes sense in a symbolic manner of speaking if you think about it. But Antoine's position on that other side just kind of ruins it. I understand that there was no other place to put him by the looks of it, but I think we'd understand if you removed him from the shot.

That's enough talking about something I'm not good at talking about. ...So now let's talk about something I AM good at talking about, the Writing. XD

Like Dylan, I'll split this into three parts: Sonic, Eggman, Freedom Fighters. Since all three of these has two scenes each, I will talk about both scenes at once.

----------------------------------------------

Sonic: ...This is my favorite third, hands down. I enjoyed watching Sonic essentially train with Moss, Mighty, and Ray, I enjoyed looking at the environment and watching Sonic do his thing all over it. Speaking of his training partners, I actually enjoy Moss as a character. Sure, he's basically the incarnation of the old wise master trope, but it's not an entirely unwelcomed trope, and he plays the part rather well. Also, for his age, he seems very agile and capable, ...a bit eye-brow-raising to see him keep up with the fastest thing in the live, even with his forest-knowledge. But if Tails and Knuckles can keep up with Sonic, I think I can give a little suspension of disbelief with Moss-ter Myagi over here.

My only problem with this third is that it feels rushed. The last issue ended with the melancholy thought of Sonic needing to be absent for a while to get his inner beast under control, when really he handled it apparently in a single day. Could it have been longer? Sure, but it never gave a time between then and now, and even two days seems a little quick for something like this. That aside, we know Thunderbolt just reported to Eggman, and the freedom fighters are just making a briefing at the same time that Sonic is training. To assume that he did it any longer would imply both parties waited that long to do these things. I get the reason why, because the transformation he's training to control happens in nightfall whether he wants to or not, which gives them less than 24 hours at best to train Sonic before then. But everything about it seems have to ended well...just a little too quickly. All it took was one day of exercise and hanging with Team Wisdom and immediately he gets the hang of it. It just feels like it happened too fast.

-----------------------------------------------

Eggman: ...Definitely the second favorite of the three. Not much to really talk about though. I do like how Eggman is contemplating on which is better between now and back when roboticization was a thing, and the points he made on both accounts. I do like the whole holographic keyboards that Orbot and Cubot have.

I have to question his little plan though. The idea is to mine and gather energy from Dark Gaia to power his empire, and the D.G.E. is astonishingly more powerful then any other energy save for one, I understand that. But...Well let's put it this way, I could go on a rant about using DGE as oppose to the Chaos Emeralds he's "Securing". ...But that's a Rant for another day I feel.

Then we have Thunderbolt. I actually kind of like her as a villain. (At least I think that's a she.) She feels to me like a Wile E. Coyote character, the kind of inventor that always makes these traps and contraptions and always ends up failing to capture the Road Runner each time. Which makes sense seeing as the original trope-frontrunner is currently busy with overseeing energy-gathering and his army's status. Not much else to say about her for now though.

--------------------------------------------------

Freedom Fighters: ...And then there was one. ...As everyone has stated before me, the central problem here is Sally. ...Who is so far starting to be, to me anyways, the most frustrating character in this series with her plans.

Frustrating because, I know she's a good strategist, I know she can have a good head on her shoulders and think up plans that make sense. But the problem is that her big plans so far are lacking common sense. The last big plan she had for an emerald, and without Eggman even knowing it I might add, and she purposely lets him know they have the emerald because she wanted to save a Crystal mine. (I'm sorry, but I'm still not over that!)

Now, they find an emerald that is so obviously a trap, they KNOW it's a trap, and the only way they could have made it anymore obvious that it's a trap, upon reaching there, is if Eggman-or the possible egg-boss overseeing this emerald-stuck a signpost by the emerald saying "THIS IS A TRAP, YOU FREAKING NUMB-SKULLS!"

Yet when the three E-100s ambushed them, Sally seemed SO shocked about it, wasn't expecting such a thing, and sad that she led them right into it.

nostalgia-critic-o.gif

...Were ALL her big plans in this post-genesis universe like this? Was she always throwing caution into a river and jumping haphazardly headfirst into danger without thinking about the reason, nor situation thoroughly? If so, then it really starts to make sense why they never shown up in the games.

*Sigh* I WILL be fair though. The funny thing about this is that She DID at least have a Backup planned. Team Fighter was meant to be that Backup. ...Why then, they are not at least a good distance away from the action, (Close enough to see and charge in when trouble happens, yet far enough to be unseen by any ambushers.) instead of the implication that they're still on the Sky Patrol, which could be parked miles away at best for all we know, I'll never know.

Now about the E-100s...

Kappa Looks Ok. Nothing bad but nothing really impressive about him, he's basically a giant upgraded burrowbot with a E-100 head. ...Though it must have some pretty impressive cloaking on it, otherwise I don't get how NONE of these three managed to not spot it.

Iota looks...freaking adorable. It's hard for me to take a little robot flicky bird seriously. That's not to say I don't see why Eggman would make it however. It's size probably makes it a little more fast and agile in the air.

...Then there's Lambda. ...If you don't mind I'm going to add just one more image here.

beeker-what-is-this-i-dont-even.gif

What is this supposed to be exactly? It's a flying snake-like robot with arms and apparently capable of throwing bombs bean-style. ...I can only guess that this...thing, is a Lyric cameo. It kind of looks like him, right down to holding an orb in his hand, even if that orb in this case is a bomb. I'll admit the design is certainly original, and I can see its use in combat, but what exactly gave Eggman the inspiration to make something like this?

------------------------------

All-in-all, not a bad issue, but not a necessarily good one either Some points I like, and some, not-so-much.

5/10 for me.

Red Quote of the Month: "Do not fight it--for you cannot fight yourself. It is not a beast, for it is you. If you are a hero, then it will be a hero as well."

I liked the issue, though I did think that Sonic learned to control his werehog form faster than he should have been able to. One thing I'm thinking will happen though is when he gets ambushed by Thunderbolt again, he'll lose control. What Thunderbolt was working on though looked familiar, and I can't place what Sonic game had a boss that looked familiar to it.

I'm still new here so tell me if I am out of line, but does anyone else wish that Archie didn't press the "reset" button and redo the story of the entire series? It feels cheap - like they didn't have any other ideas to do with the older storyline. There are probably other forms addressing this, but I feel, well, betrayed by an old friend... :(
