      Interesting. I actually have an alternate theory: Shard could still be around, but instead of being rebuilt from the original Metal Sonic, what if he was originally Mecha Sonic from 'Sonic 3 & Knuckles'? He could've still been rebuilt by Chuck, and have a similar personality, but he just has a slightly different backstory.
