      The Wii was a clever move. The 3Ds .... Was saved by animal crossing. But the 2Ds? What is it, A paper console ?

      I think another reason for the 2DS's creation was to allow younger players to play 3DS games, without the 'fear' of accidentally turning the 3D effect on (since children under 6 years old could suffer eye problems with it turned on). Other than that, it's basically a poor man's 3DS.
