    I was thinking. Since there is that desert image of the deleted Sonic CD Zone, doesn't that mean the Dust Hill Zone mock up was actually for Sonic CD and not Sonic 2 ?

      Yes and no. The image that was in the 2011 remake was actually from a version of that zone that would have been implemented into CD, but it originally was intended for Sonic 2. It's hard to say what game it was truly intended for however because of the fact that Sonic CD and Sonic 2 were both in development at roughly the same time, hence why Sonic CD has a rougher version of the spin dash.
