Allow me to also add some context, while you made this comment, the whole world is at each other's throats. Still is sort of. And I was seeing a lot of comments saying how horrible British people were because of our history. Completely serious too. When you're seeing that constantly and with a world at each others throats stuff that may have been funny becomes much less funny

So the least you could do instead of insisting your joke is funny to those who the joke is referencing and don't find it funny would be to drop it

I hold absolutely no animosity towards the British people. The 'British' in my original status update references mostly the government and the military, and that of the 18th century, mind you. A fact is a fact - the 13 colonies getting their independence from the British Empire is what happened on that day.

Excuse me if that joke (which isn't even much of a joke, now that I think about it) offends you in any way, because it was never supposed to.

I'm not saying you hold animosity. I'm saying that given the circumstance of the world, the joke is an absolute horrible joke to be making at this point and you shouldn't be doing it when everyone is already in an "us VS them" mentality right now. It's the context at the moment which makes this really bad

If you'd done this last year, it wouldn't really matter as much we weren't in the same position and I wouldn't have said anything. All I even said for this was "feel like there are nicer ways to put this". You were the one who then brought up we shouldn't be taking this seriously when the whole world has a lot of serious things they are looking at and dealing with while being mad at each other for having different viewpoints. Jokes like these don't help the situation right now
