If it's only minor modifications like adding the spindash and patching the spike bug in Sonic 1, then I do have to say that I would usually play the unmodified versions, as the minor enhancement and change only does so much.

In general, for modifications, I like hacks that completely change the level layouts and their design - doesn't always have to be 100% new graphics, music, enemies or anything though - although I'd play those too. Don't really mess around with the more gimmicky hacks though.

Sorry about the duplicate account, but I had to create one so I could post this because I can't log into my original account and when I try to change my password, it says I can't use password recovery.

My new favorites:
Sonic 1 Genesis (Japan)(Slightly Modded)
Sonic 2 Genesis (Slightly Modded)
Sonic 3 & Knuckles Genesis
Sonic CD SEGA-CD (Japan)(Slightly Modded)

I wanted the Sonic 2 Spindash in all four games, so I applied hacks to my ROMs. In doing so I also made each game as close to their gameplay in Sonic Origins Classic Mode as possible.
-Sonic 1: The spike bug is fixed, along with a few other glitches. Credit to Juice Hedgehog on YouTube. I turned the ROM into an xdelta patch so I can apply the hack to my legally-owned-and-dumped Japanese Sonic 1 ROM. I also forced the region to Japan so that you get an extra life every 50000 points like all the other Genesis Sonic games.
-Sonic 2: Hacked so that when you exit a Special Stage you keep all the rings you had when you entered it, like in Sonic Origins. This also makes the game equal to Knuckles In Sonic 2. Credit to Tony Hedstrom on GameHacking.org.
-Sonic CD: Used the Sonic CD++ Option Select Tool to just add the Sonic 2 Spindash to the game, nothing else. Credit to qiuu and snkenjoi on Sonic Retro.
