If it's only minor modifications like adding the spindash and patching the spike bug in Sonic 1, then I do have to say that I would usually play the unmodified versions, as the minor enhancement and change only does so much.

 

In general, for modifications, I like hacks that completely change the level layouts and their design - doesn't always have to be 100% new graphics, music, enemies or anything though - although I'd play those too. Don't really mess around with the more gimmicky hacks though.

I wanted to have the Sonic 2 Spindash in all four games. In addition to that:
Sonic 1 - A few fixes and tweaks were thrown in. Credit to Juice Hedgehog on YouTube. I changed the default region to Japan (So that you earn an extra life every 50,000 points like every other Classic Sonic game) and converted the hack to an xdelta patch to apply to my legally-owned-and-dumped Japanese Sonic 1 ROM
Sonic 2 - After exiting a Special Stage, you keep the amount of rings you had when you entered the stage, thus making the game more equal to Knuckles In Sonic 2. Credit to terpsfan101 and Tony Hedstrom on GameHacking.org.
Sonic CD - Used the Sonic CD ++ Option Select Tool to just add the Sonic 2 Spindash to the game, nothing else. Credit to qiuu and snkenjoi on Sonic Retro.
