If it's only minor modifications like adding the spindash and patching the spike bug in Sonic 1, then I do have to say that I would usually play the unmodified versions, as the minor enhancement and change only does so much.

 

In general, for modifications, I like hacks that completely change the level layouts and their design - doesn't always have to be 100% new graphics, music, enemies or anything though - although I'd play those too. Don't really mess around with the more gimmicky hacks though.

I wanted the Sonic 2 Spindash in all four games, and while applying the hacks, other changes were made to try and make the Genesis versions as close as possible to their Classic Mode versions in Sonic Origins:
Sonic 1 = The Sonic 2 Spindash was added and the spike bug was fixed, among other things. Credit to Juice Hedgehog on YouTube. I altered the hack to set its default region to Japan. Why? So then you get an extra life every 50,000 points like every other classic Sonic game. I also turned the hack into an xdelta patch so I could apply it to my own-legally-dumped Japanese Sonic 1 ROM.
Sonic 2 = A Game Genie code was applied to make it so that when you exit a Special Stage, you have the same amount of Rings you had when entering the Special Stage, which now makes the game equal to Knuckles In Sonic 2. Credit to terpsfan101 and Tony Hedstrom on GameHacking.org.
Sonic CD: The Sonic 2 Spindash was added via the Sonic CD ++ Option Select Tool. Nothing else was added or changed. Credit to qiuu and snkenjoi on Sonic Retro.
