Feel better for venting? It can be Therapeutic.

Have to go with the porn (SO MUCH PORN). Gets in the way of looking for fun things. Like epic fight works!

Not much against shippers, only the outrageously out there ones. (You know who you are.) Cant say too much against, as I am a ShardXNicole (He will return!)

I suppose some Fan Characters, but they generally don't get in the way of anything, and seem easy enough to avoid.

But i'm a huge fan of twisted/goofy spinoffs. see http://exterminatusnow.co.uk/.

Also, not a boom fan. Needed a bit more character. And more brainpower from knuckles.

And lastly, I HATE....... the fact underground doesn't get more love.

THIS! I HATE the fact they made Knuckles an idiot! Knuckles used to be smart (still is in the comic world thank god) Even in Sonic X he was a bit gullible, but SMART! More awesome Knuckles thank you!!!!

Honestly, while Sonic fans have a rep about being the 'worst fans ever' I don't think that's true.

Now...

Back when the internet and internet fandom was first coming into force, it was true.  But other fandoms have caught up.  In essence, the Sonic fandom was the first 'bad internet' fandom, and as such will always be regarded as the worst.

I really think that nowadays Steven Universe or MLP fandoms are worse than Sonic one.

I think you have already said most of what I don't like about the most twisted part of our fandom: the excessive (and agressive) shipping comunities, the (not)Original Characters, the Mary-Sue Characters, the nitpicking with the games...

So I'll say something different. Aside from all of that, I don't like the image that the Sonic Fan has on the internet (and sometimes out of it). Most of the fans are not weirdos, or nitpicking, or non-creative.

I love drawing and writing, and when I make Sonic stuff, I don't go insane or anything. Yes, I have a few fan-characters, but they are neither re-colors nor Mary-Sues. I love the games, I even enjoyed Shadow The Hedgehog (don't kill me, plz). I enjoy most of the media the Blue Blur appears in (excluding Sonic Boom). Yet, despite all of this, I have faced situations where people wondered if I was okay being a Sonic fan and if I met someone crazy.

What have we done wrong, people?

I know exactly what you mean about wondering if being a Sonic Fan is okay ChaosKaiser.  I once told a friend, who is one of the most easy going, laid back accepting guys I know, that I was a Sonic Fan, and the look he gave me followed by 'I'll have to keep that in mind....' was kinda shocking.

I think the reason for the rep goes back to what I said before.  We're not the worst fanbase out there, but we were the first toxic fanbase on the internet, and are now permanently labeled the worst, and all tarred with the same brush.

I think it ultimately comes down to the vocal and rather strange minority making up the majority of what people think about the Sonic fandom. Couple that with a lot of young people being big fans of Sonic and many of those young people happening to be very loud with their love and to an outsider looking in you get an obnoxious fanbase. The people with klaxons and megaphones stand out while the quiet ones who discuss level design and story progression in the comics tend to get overlooked.

@Skye Prower That's what I'm talking about. We aren't monsters or creeps. We just like games, shows or comics about colorful animals with superpowers wearing gloves and shoes. Said like that doesn't sound bad at all.

@tiny260 So, we are overlooked, while the lastest (and creepiest) ShadowXShrek fan-art is what people keeps in their minds.

I know how this works, but I feel like our image hasn't changed over the years, like there are only cringy (I don't like that word) fans.

Do we even exist?

We exist (assuming all this isn't a figment of someone's imagination) but the loudmouth and stranger elements are what get noticed.  You see it everywhere!

It's true for every group. Easiest to focus on the loud, nosey twits because the draw attention. Its the verbal/written equivalent of wearing bright red on a dark green background. And it's easy to ignore the background with attention drawing foreground. It's human nature. That and also remembering the painful, scarring bits of life and forgetting the good that came from the same spot.

What I hate the most about this fandom is over-the-top aggression and fragmentaion. Also there's too much NSFW and yaoi/yuri (every fandom has these, but Sonic gets the worst). The problem that these pics get more attetion than the good quality art. I can't stand shipping. And lack of at least decent fanworks.

Interesting topic you got here.

Well, for starters, I'll tell you about whatever fan-made Sonic content I don't like.

One: I'd just like to point out that seeing soft porn or other moderate NSFW art or concepts of Sonic characters doesn't impact me as much as it used to, so long as it's in decent taste and isn't run or weird and extremely specific fetishes. (Jennifer Hernandez has an "after dark" account on Twitter and the header has a certain black hedgehog playing top fork, by the way.) The "what I don't like" part is the distasteful stuff, of course. I'm fine with anything playful as long as it has brain standards such as close-aged and mature characters and not romanticizing abuse. Very defined brain standards.

Two: The art thieves and the crap they regurgitate. Oh, god. You know what I'm talking about. People who would rather clone the hard work of SEGA or even another artist and deface it rather than do it themselves. What we get are horrible, uncreative recolor designs and the original artist gets the short end of the stick because of the thievery. For a victim of it, try the Sonic artist E-Vay. Does she have stories to tell.

Three: Really, anything uncreative, sloppy, boring or hateful. Sues and Stus, apathetically dark and lazy slash, bland and uncreative fan-children and self-inserts, "this character should die", you get the idea. Yes, the people who make these can be younger fans, but it's one of the reasons why I think DeviantART needs to put a tighter leash on its members due to how absurd it is. Some of these clichés can be improved and fleshed out as seen with the popular Sonamy fankid Aurora (created by the aforementioned E-Vay) and how much healthy meat is on her bones, but trying to find these exceptions are like trying to find a needle in a hay factory. As for ships, I don't want anything like what we saw in the post-Sonic Adventure era of the comics. And I hate seeing Sally and Amy fighting or demonized. SO MUCH.

I could also say that I hate any Sonic art that is unexpressive because it doesn't visually interest me, but that's too preferenced.

Now on to the fans themselves. The species of the obstinate and rude vocal minority include:

Fanboys: Unhealthily giant and feckless fanboys of Sonic who are not just indifferent to anything else but will treat anything other than Sonic with aggression. Note the aggression part since there can be an excuse for fanboying as seen with Sonic fans on the autism spectrum who can't help it. Just the mean and unimproving ones are in this category.

The opinionated: Sonic fans who are extremely defensive of their opinions and will go to any length to preserve them, e.g. aggressive and sensational Sonic Boom or Big haters who will not only waste time and energy on rants and stupid demotivation posters, but will also be mean to their fellow fans about their counter-opinions and will keep themselves in a self-filter bubble.

Trolls: Any further description would be an insult to your intelligence.

And that's it. Sorry if you get a bit lost–my Internet writing skills are a little out of practice.

While I do agree with you Blue... I do think making bad fan characters is important, so that one can improve their imagination and future characters. heck, I've made TONS of bad OC's in the past, whether or not one puts them on DeviantArt however is a whole different thing, They might at the time think it is a good idea, and regret later, but it's good to have a solid ground when starting to create new characters, with better stories and better looks. I've seen tons of bad Oc's in my time, some okay ones and a few with even original back story, and I can assure you that none of the okay ones or the original ones were created instantly without having a few problems. As for Mary Sues.. Probably made By younger audience as you said, true they're mostly horrible or so bad they're amazing, but it gives some direction to the makers, about HOW to improve their characters.. Unless they're headstrong and start yelling and defending their "original" character.. Some might also be made By internet trolls. (at least I do hope so). But I think it's a GOOD thing they do exist on the internet. They're a good warning example of what NOT to do, help you improve your skills as an artists, and may give you some good ideas even.

(Other than that I still do hate them too.)

I hate those kind of fans who say they're your friend and then technically steal your style little By little. They're worse than usual art stealers since it hurts more on the emotional side when your supposed friend is the one betraying you.. I Also do not really like the character sprite comics... I don't know why but something about the style keeps nagging me. I'm okay with internet comics however, just not... With the said Mary Sues.

What do you mean by "stealing" someone's style? I'm a little confused as I always thought that the style in which people draw can leave room for improvement. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all. Example, I can barely draw to save my life, the closest things I had to properly drawing people were more like rounded stickfigures. When I saw a couple of pictures a friend of mine drew, I thought to myself "that looks neat, I should try to do something like that" and it helped me improve my art style dramatically.

...still can't draw to save my life, mind, but at least they look like cartoons rather than deformed stickmen now.

Well for example..

I've brought this up before.. My "friend" thought my character was cool, so he took it, changed it to match another world, without even asking me for permission, rp:ed as the said character, and even at times lectured me "as the character."

Pretty much they take character, change it a little while still keeping the same name, background story etc. and call it their own. That's what I hate.

Now you've mentioned the fan-characters, does anyone know why are there so many over-the-top gritty and emo Shadow rip-offs?

I have always seen the Sonic franchise as a superhero/manga-ish story with cartoony/cute? characters and some deep mythos, but never as a dark, depressing and gory remake of Dragon Ball with animals (though I fully understand the comparisons between Sonic and Dragon Ball. There are too many common elements to ignore)

Oh, that's easy to explain!

See, such characters are often seen as 'cool' and 'adult' by young teens, not realising they take things to such extremes then more often end up 'ridiculous' and 'childish'.

So, when teens who enjoyed Sonic in their childhood reach their teens, some don't want to let go of their childhood favs, which is fine.  But they want their favs to 'grow up' with them, which is understandable, but can lead to problems.  Such as on influx of over the top grim-dark fan characters so these teens feel that Sonic is now more 'adult' and acceptable.

Missing the point that they're still dealing with cartoon talking animals! ;-p

Personally, I've always seen Sonic as 'superheros but animals' myself.  So... maybe we shouldn't be surprised there are some people who want to see a 'dark age'.

Well, I discovered Sonic when I was 8 years old. Now I'm 19 and haven't even think that way about the Sonic universe.

But I get it. It's basically that stupid thought of "the grittier and edgier, the more mature and adult" all over again, right?. Jeez... Disney movies take on some mature themes but don't get edgy or violent, for example.

Yep, that sums it up.  Thankfully, it's just some of the fans who push it that way, not the games.  Heck even Shadow the Hedgehog (game) isn't really THAT dark.  At least not much more than the whole 'using living creatures as batteries/CPU's' standard Sonic plot.

The FANS, mostly.

There is nothing wrong with the Sonic the Hedgehog series itself
(Yeah, It has it's flaws. but, what series doesn't?)

Some fans are good fans. Open-Minded, Diverse. and stick with Sonic, even through the worst of times.

OTHERS, however. can take things far too seriously.
And only end up making a bad situation worse.

I mean, Sonic '06, Sonic the Werehog, Sonic Boom.
The most annoying thing about those aspects of Sonic is how much "fans" complain about it.

Can't I just enjoy the thing I love without getting tangled up into some kind of "World War III"?!

That be life in a nutshell though isn't it? The best and worst thing about most Fandoms is the fans themselves.
