Role-Playing Questions

12 posts in this topic

I thought it might be handy to have a Q&A style topic, especially for people haven't done forum RPing before. Afraid I've got a question already!

How are conversations between characters handled in a forum RP? Making a wild guess, between players does it work by several quick-fire posts? I.e. Player 1 posts his line, Player 2 posts the response Player 1 replies again etc? (Though that could get tricky with multiple players in different time-zones! :P )

If the conversion is between a player and an NPC (or multiple PC's controlled by a single player), can the whole conversation take place within a single post?

Thanks.

Good questions. The answer for both is yes. That IS how conversations work. Yeah, it can get annoying considering the different time zones. However, Only the players in question know what they're characters are like. What they'll say, how they'll say it, if whether or not they do an action as well. Sadly, it's one of the negatives of RPing. It takes time due to the time zones of the world. It's still possible to overcome that with a little patience however. (One of my friends is from Australia, so are time zones are virtually polar opposites. But that doesn't stop us from RPing with each other when we can.)

However, I wouldn't say "Quick-Fire" though. Constant back and forth between you and another isn't necessarily a good idea. ...Actually Speed-posting in general isn't a good idea.

Also yes, it CAN take a single post for a Conversation between player and NPC. However, you have to consider that in that post you'd be speaking for both people in the conversation, so it may take time to do. So if you get tired, which is possible, I suggest finding a good place to stop the conversation, and continue it next post.

PS. Excellent idea for this topic, mate.

I have a question, seeing as I just posted on the Chaos Freedom IC thread without looking at the OOC thread first, am I allowed to do that? Because I'm going to go ahead and post information about my character on the OOC thread now and I'm kind of new at RP thread posting.

A very good question. Unfortunately no. You're not suppose to go to the IC before the OOC. The Information is not just for display, but also for acceptance. A character has to be accepted before entering the actual RP.

However, upon talking with Oda about it, (Since he and Cronic are basically my advisers here.) I've decided that, since you're new to RPs, and this hasn't been mentioned before, We'll let it slide only this once.

Me again!

Having not done freeform RPing before, I just want to make sure I understand how it all works. Essentially, everyone is writing there own story, but each story can interact with others and change as a result?

Also, how far can you reasonably go when coming up with stuff? (A few hypothetical examples of what's good and what's too far would be very appreciated.) Are you free to come up with new side characters and/or villains should you wish? And in the latter case, would they need an OOC profile?

Hmmm, All of those are very good questions.

Essentially, yes. Plot lines are usually consisting of a point A and a point B. A beginning and an end. Going straight across in an RP is a Direct plot, and choosing how to get from point A to point B is a Loose plot. (This would be my Forte'.)

But with Free plots, there is no planned out point B, only a planned out point A. Everyone can make a story go where they like to, and the end we make when we want to make it.

However, there ARE limitations so that it doesn't get too chaotic. At the very least, without my Permission, you can't go and make, say, a God. You can't cause said God to ravage the lands of Mobius and completely change the setting completely. (Like World of Warcraft Cataclysm.) Another way to put it is, ...Anything that Mogul has done in the past, you cannot do. Anything that Enerjak has done, you cannot do. Anything that involves changing the tables of power in the snap of the fingers, (I.E. Killing Eggman, and killing Elias and Sally, then immediately taking both sides over.) is something that can't be done without my permission at best. I would use a character as a hypothetical example. ...But I don't think I have to, just look at the Silver Saga of Sonic Universe with Enerjak, or the moments of Godhood from Mogul, and you'll have an idea of what isn't allowed in RPs like this. At least not without permission.

What is good then? ....Just about anything else. Bear in mind, it has to be within the rules of God-modding and what-not, and it has to make sense. Unfortunately, I don't have any examples other than the good being the ones that aren't screwing with the setting as much and the bad being the ones that are god-like, or just too random. Randomness is okay, but only when it's leveled. The more chaotic messes are ironically much harder to control and keep at a balance.

To answer your last question, yes. You are free to make new side-characters/villains. I, for one, am planning to have a certain few entered to spice things up later on. But yes, they would need an OOC profile. Remember, OOCs are for acceptance, not just display. In the case of CF, you also have to remember that there is a limit to how many characters you can add. Do bear that in mind as well.

I was wondering, is it allowed to have two characters that the same person is controlling, in my case Blaze and Aqua, meet each other?

I can answer that by saying yes that is allowed. If you look in Jest's rp you will see that he hard Mogul and Red meet when he controls both.

Um, those Admin Hammer's that just popped up in CF. Do they have some 'everything is okay' field to go with them? Cause otherwise I can't see many of the characters being happy until they knows for certain Blaze and Aqua are safe. Doubly so as they just left Mogul's casino with the DEL closing in on them!

Some might, I can see some Admin hammers making a letter of some kind to the characters, maybe alter their minds to make them believe them to be ok, or erase them from the minds in the case of permanent removal. ...Unfortunately, that kind of thing never occurred to me to include onto mine. I usually have them pull it off in such a way to make the characters assume something's naturally happened. In place of that, Jake and Tai will serve as the "everything is Ok" field.
