  1. So after reading Issue #261, my thoughts are...

...kinda mixed. On the one hand, we do get to see the city of Meropis itself, as well as some more backstory for Coral and the city, which I liked. But then we meet the King and Queen themselves. Others have said this before, but now we have a new jerk King to replace King Acorn, and the Queen is almost as bad. To put it simply:

    [media=]

The fact that they don't even believe Sonic's story, even though they've dealt with Eggman's forces before via Ahklut (though it's nice to know he's still around) immediately makes me dislike them, and Captain Striker to a lesser extent. Of course, they may also be under the influence of Dark Gaia (just like the citizens are implied to be) and they might change after the Unleashed arc is over. But for now... yeah, I don't like them. Aside from that, there wasn't much that stood out to me. The backup story was... there, I guess. Really, the only part of that story which I found to be important was the Chaos Emerald. Overall, not one of my favourites.

  2. So, it's a live-action/animation hybrid? (Which, courtesy of Sonic Retro & Sonic Stadium, will apparently be part of a franchise with one movie released per year...)

    [media=]

Right now, I don't really know how to react. And it's likely going to stay that way until a teaser/trailer is released for it. What I will say for now is:

    1) At least Marza Animation Planet (the guys behind the Sonic Unleashed opening and Night of the Werehog) are likely working on the CGI. That's awesome!

    2) Live-action crossed with CGI could mean a few different things; either we get something like Disney's Dinosaur, or... *shudders* ...The Smurfs.

    3) If that 'one movie a year' part turns out to be true, then I will be much more worried. Especially since other examples of this are the Matrix sequels and Planes.

  3. Okay, time for my thoughts on Issue #64:

An alright issue overall. The beginning was pretty funny, with Bean stealing the show thanks to that little Deadpool moment and 'NINJA VANISH' (followed by Espio's criticism), along with everyone just stopping the fight when they realise no-one has the Emerald. Too bad the Hooligans only appear again for one page after that, though I do like how it shows Bark not exactly feeling enthusiastic about working for Eggman. Aside from that, however, it just seemed to be more chatter between Knux and the Chaotix. And though that's not necessarily bad, I felt like it did kinda drag on a little bit, but this could make sense depending on how the next issue plays out. Speaking of future issues, it seems like Relic's and Fixit's little segments (though it has a little extra backstory) really just serves as a teaser for 'Total Eclipse', as I'm pretty sure that 'alien energy reading' is actually Eclipse's escape shuttle. Overall, I thought the issue was okay, but nothing special aside from Chip.

  4. So....Lyric......(breaks into uncontrollable fit of laughter)

That's the villain? Some steam-punk reboot of Lord Hood? For real?

First, what kind of name is Lyric? Is he a poet? Is boss fight going to be musical?

For some reason I always seem to accidentally call him Relic. I mean, the names are rather similar, but maybe it also shows how... unthreatening the name 'Lyric' is.

Second, his design is so bland, He doesn't look like Big Bad, he looks like secondary villain. Or one-time boss. Or simple minion that you beat up in dozens. He doesn't even look like Mobian!

Well, this isn't exactly Mobius now, is it? In all seriousness, though, I doubt that he'll survive the end of the games. If he does, then he'll likely be a secondary villain.

And third they couldn't over-hype him more? Most vile and formidable villain in Sonic history? An extremely tech-savvy mastermind? What next, he's Eggman's idol?

OK, OK, I'm being unfair. What was his plan again? Destroy the world with army of robots? (start laughing again)

BTW Why are snakes always the bad guys? Accursed typecasting!

It's pretty much the same thing they did with the Deadly Six. Sure, they did some very evil and dark things story-wise, but boss-wise? Yeah, not so 'Deadly'. And Lyric being Eggman's idol is... actually a possibility in this game. I mean, poor old Eggy seems to only be playing second fiddle to Lyric in the games, though I suspect it's to give Eggman a bit more freedom in the show. For now, I'm gonna stay cautiously optimistic until I pick up the 3DS version when it's released. Then I'll judge the game.

  5. Some of the pre-E3 footage shows that Eggman is a boss in the game. Whether-or-not he's an early-game boss I don't know (though the fight did look pretty easy), but it does mean that he'll have some kind of role in the games. But again, judging from the blog statement, it looks like he might only be the secondary antagonist at best.

  6. According to the official statement from SEGA's blog, "Lyric is a giant and monstrous snake-like creature from an ancient race. An extremely tech-savvy mastermind who uses a sophisticated robotic body of armor to carry out his own nefarious deeds, he is a formidable enemy and a force to be reckoned with. [...] The goal is to prevent Lyric from powering his army of robots and carrying out his plan to destroy the world." Also, in the 3DS version, Sticks is playable instead of Amy because she's been kidnapped by Lyric. All of this (and the fact that Eggman isn't even mentioned ONCE in the entire statement) leads me to believe that Eggman will only play a minor role in this game. I think it's also been said that he's actually inspired by Lyric's actions in the games, leading to Eggman becoming the main villain in the show.

  7. Actually, they have stated that she'll be prominent (or at least, have some role to play) in the game too. The official statement is as follows:

In advance of the highly-anticipated launch of Sonic Boom, the newest branch of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe announced earlier this year, SEGA is pleased to unveil Sticks, a brand-new character that will play an integral role across all Sonic Boom platforms. Sticks, a jungle badger who has spent most of her life living alone in the wilderness, will appear in the Sonic Boom TV series, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS video games, and merchandise, forming a common thread across all iterations of the new Sonic Boom world. Sticks joins Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy to form the core ensemble featured throughout the Sonic Boom franchise.

  8. That voice... I can't tell whether it's 'good-annoying' or 'bad-annoying'. But aside from that, this looks pretty interesting. It gives the show another female addition to the team (at least, I think Sticks is female...?) and further gives the series a unique feel compared to the main series. But I'm not sure if that name will really stick with the fans. Also, I've been looking at the 'Behind The Voice Actors' page for Stick's voice actress (Nika Futterman), and some other notable roles she's done include Asajj Ventress from 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' (the CG one) and Pandora from 'Kid Icarus: Uprising', just to name a couple. Now to see if she's actually useful in 'Boom'...

Well, it's about time! I'm definately looking forward to the Werehog's debut, especially since Mighty and Ray are involved too! (Maybe there could be a 'Mighty vs. Werehog fight scene in this arc...?) I'm interested in learning a little bit about this 'Thunderbolt' character. Also note that it's only a two-parter, and it has a backup story like with 'Waves of Change', so it's gonna be significantly shorter than the current arcs. Speaking of backups, Antoine and Bunnie having a personal problem during thie crisis? This definately has me intrigued. Oh, and the SSM having a little inside info on 'Sonic Boom'. I'm down for that too, I guess. What are your thoughts, guys?

  10. Well, as BlueBlur has pointed out above me, there are indeed new covers and solicits for Issue #67 - Total Eclipse, Part 1 (spoilered due to size):

    3836797-sonicuniverse_67.jpg3836799-sonicuniverse_67var.jpg

BRAND NEW STORY ARC! The events of "Shadow Fall" and "Chaos Caper" have clashed to collision in the epic new tale -- "Total Eclipse" Part One! The third chapter in the DARK TRILOGY begins here as Team Dark comes to Angel Island on the hunt for Eclipse. But Knuckles isn’t known for his hospitality! Sparks begin to fly as he and Shadow clash over how to protect the world! Meanwhile, the sinister Eclipse hunts our heroes! It's the first-ever SU TRILOGY and you'll be in on the ground floor with this titanic new issue, featuring cover art from TRACY YARDLEY and a special "PIXEL CUTSCENE" variant from Ryan Jampole!

Interesting how they're turning this into a trilogy. (It kinda reminds me of this one time the Pokemon movies tried the same thing...) Looks like those 'After The Credits' scenes in Issue #62 were more connected than we thought. Aside from that, it seems like it'll start off with a typical 'Hero vs. Hero' battle, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Also, it looks like the cover styles will be recieving a change, what with the 'Archie Action Series' on the front. What are your thoughts on this, guys?

  11. Now I'm just picturing an Off-Panel involving Sonic (in his Werehog form) and Tails discussing about this:

Sonic: "Hey Tails, you ever wonder what you'd look like in this kind of form?"

Tails: "Maybe once or twice, but..." (has a suddden flashback of Titan Tails)

    Sonic: "Uhh... you okay, Tails?"

Tails: "...I don't ever want to think about it again."

    3 people like this

  12. Geez, it's getting intense over at Bumbleking about this After the Credits thing. I can understand their opinions, but they sure are strong. I mean, it's over now and I doubt it'll happen again. I don't see the need to have a massive debate over it now. What's done is done and all that.

Maybe I'm being a bit insensitive, since I'm not buying them, but they are being very analytical over this entire thing.

I know what you mean. While I haven't participated in the discussion over there, I can see why they're doing this. The concept was just very poorly executed, and many people like to have the full story. Aside from the few that actually liked 'After The Credits Month', I've found that there are those who felt like it was a waste of space, and those who didn't like having to not only find, but (in legal cases) buy the same issue twice, just to get one little extra page of content.

Also, just going over the endings they had, there was either:

    - a scene leading into the next arc (STH Variant, SU & MM Standard), or

    - a scene hinting at later events and/or characters (STH Standard, SU & MM Variant)

While Scenario B is kinda new and interesting, Scenario A has already been used before (see: the first few arcs of Sonic Universe), which makes it seem less intriguing. The problem is, you never know if/when something like this could happen again in the future. That's why, as far as I can tell, the reason the BumbleCommunity are driving their strong opinions across is because they want to make sure that it never happens again (or at least, not how it was done this time).

(Also, if anyone wants to continue discussing 'After The Credits Month' specifically, I'd suggest heading over to the topic I made a while back.)

  13. I really don't know why the boss from Lost world was such a mess. I think Sega was trying to avoid the "Eggman gets betrayed by the creature that he tried to control and it turns on everyone for the final boss battle' point, mainly because it's been done enough. It was interesting though that when they decided to do it for Lost World that they timed it earlier into the game so it WAS the plot instead of the 'twist' for the boss fight. Even so, Sega really could have done a lot better with the final boss. It wasn't all that memorable in design either. I can't really remember what the mech even looked like. Only reason I'd ever replay the boss over again is to miss that one red ring.

I agree with you about the common Sonic 'twist' being played in Lost World right at the beginning as a good thing, especially since it meant that we got to see more interaction between the characters. (Namely Eggman. He's just great in that game, in my opinion.) The only thing I found to be 'memorable' about the final boss design is that it bears a resemblance to Eggman's Classic design. Aside from that, nothing else. (Well... that's not entirely true, I kinda liked the green energy 'cape'...)

Truth be told, I wouldn't care all that much about a weak storyline if the gameplay was really fun and well structured and the bosses were interesting without being cheap.

Oh, I get what you mean. While I'm not a fan of the recent stories, that certainly doesn't mean games like Colours or Generations are bad. I still go back to Generations or Sonic 3&K much more than I do Unleashed or the Adventure games, and definately more than Riders. The gameplay will always be the most important parts of Sonic games (or just games in general), but when possible, I'd like to see a game with both an interesting storyline, as well as excellent gameplay. But that's for another topic.

  14. Not sure if other people encountered this problem with the 3DS version but did anyone encounter a lot of cheap deaths towards the end of the game? I found on the Wii U version that towards the end of the game, last world I believe it was or maybe second last, especially with that lava level that I had to go stock up on lives even though I hadn't found much difficulty with the game at all earlier. I could have beaten the game the day I got it had I not raged quit towards the end there.

I can't speak for the Wii-U version (especially with the patch updates and DLC), but the 3DS version of Lost World gets absolutely RIDICULOUS near the endgame! Even if you have the highest amount of patience, you'll still hate it. I barely made it through as it was. And if you thought that's bad... there's a Hard Mode afterwards.

Also, I know Sonic has never really been the most story driven of games and that I was pretty much expecting the ending that we got, but why did the final boss have to be such a let down? What happened to the good old days where the boss battles were so hyped up to? I mean Generations sorta did that but the boss was still a bit of a let down as well.

That's the new Sonic games for ya. Sure, Gens kinda hyped up the Time Eater, and even Colours had a fair bit of foreshadowing the Nega-Wisp Armour, with the big Nega-Wisp area in Asteroid Coaster, but the final bosses have been pretty lackluster. Although, while I think the Nega-Wisp Armour was a decent finale, the final boss in Lost World (does it even have a name?) was just a blatant rehash of that boss, only easier. I could go on, rambling about why I dislike the most recent Sonic storylines, but I don't want this post to go over the limits. I'll just say that Unleashed (as well as Adventure 2 & Riders, to an extent) is my favourite storyline so far.

  15. Hmm... seems as though the mysterious light (presumably Tikal) will be the reason Sonic joins forces with Coral. A nice little tie-in to Universe #63, if you ask me.

Now all that's left is the Mega Man alternate ending, and this whole 'After The Credits' fiasco will be behing us at last. I haven't exactly been a fan of it, that's for sure.

  16. One thing I'd like to note is Knuckles relationship with the Chaotix seems similar to the previous canon, but something about their interactions with Knuckles seems a bit different.

Since it's going on a more games-based setting, in this continuity Knuckles and the Chaotix haven't met anywhere near as much as last time. There last conversations in this continuity would likely have happened in either Colours or Generations, and it's hard to know how long it's been since they last teamed up together like this.

  17. Just finished reading Issue #63, so here are my thoughts:

It was a good start. Seeing Knuckles' reaction to the crisis was actually pretty funny, and it's nice to see the return of Tikal and Chaos. (Especially since, thanks to the recent solicit reveals, we know where he'll be showing up...) As for Relic and Fixit, they seem like decent characters, and I think it would be cool to see Fixit learn more about his origins (perhaps even having a Universe arc focused on him and Gemerl at some point). The Chaotix are their usual... chaotic selves, which I like to see, and it's good to know that Mighty and Ray are still close friends with them. I loved the nods to both 'Knuckles Chaotix' and 'Sonic Heroes', Knuckles' 'Emerald Radar', and the lyrics of Pumpkin Hill incorporated into Knux's thoughts. Team Hooligan, though... on the one hand, it's about Darn time Nack showed up in the comics again! On the other hand, it hasn't been that long since Bean and Bark's last appearence, so I'm not sure how to feel about them returning so soon. Overall, a good start.

  18. Nooo! Not Mega man, Pharoah man and Bright Man! D: Not them! Time for originals to take the spotlight again? :D Seriously, they had very little appearance in Worlds Collide, and other than that, they haven't been together full team since MM #12! Can't wait for the covers!

I'm sure that the originals will have major roles to play soon, just not yet. Perhaps the 'Mega Man 3' arc will bring them in for more than just the final battle, especially with the 'Mega Man 2' Robot Masters still around. Until then, I'm interested to see what Bright Man brings to the table, aside from more foreshadowing to 'Mega Man 4'.

  19. Rejoice! For I am here with the covers and solicitation for Issue #39: The penultimate part of the 'Dawn of X' crossover-of-sorts!

    1347310_ful.jpg1347309_ful.jpg

MEGA MAN #39: (W) Ian Flynn (A) Jamal Peppers & Various (CA) Patrick Spaz Spaziante

The epic Dawn of X crossover reaches its penultimate chapter, and things are heating up in both Past and Future! 'A Hint of Things to Come', Part Three: Mega Man, Pharaoh Man and Bright Man-trapped and at the mercy of a long lost Wily Weapon! Can Dr. Light find a way to stop it, or is this the end of Mega Man's story? And what will robot-hating Xander do in a future filled with reploids? Featuring all-new cover art from the legendary Patrick 'Spaz' Spaziante and a 32-Bit-style cut scene variant from mega-artist Ryan Jampole!

Aside from Xander's little trip through time, it looks like this'll likely just be a 'past-affects-the-future' storyline, which I'm okay with. What are your thoughts, guys?

  20. Ah, it feels good to be doing these again. Here are the covers and solicitation for the upcoming Issue #263: The finale to 'Waves of Change'!

(WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR A CERTAIN APPEARANCE IN SU #63!)

    1347347_ful.jpg1347346_ful.jpg

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #263: (W) Ian Flynn, Aleah Baker (A) Evan Stanley & Various (CA) Ben Bates

'Waves of Change,' Part Four: Cool off from the hot summer sun with Sonic the Hedgehog! The tides are turning in Sonic's favor-literally-as Chaos joins the fray! It's all-out war to save the underwater city from total devastation in this thrilling conclusion! Then, in 'Consequences,' take a sneak peek into Eggman's shattered world crisis battle plan-we'll give you a hint, it's evil! Featuring super-cool cover art from Ben Bates and a Chao-tastic variant cover from Evan Stanley.

Well, at least we now know where Chaos jumped off to in SU #63. (I assume that he jumped, I haven't actually read the issue yet, just the summary.) And still no mention of the Werehog fully appearing, which surprises me since I thought the 'Change' in the title would refer to that. Oh well, there's always the next arc...

As an added bonus, here's the cover & solicit for the Sonic Super Digest #8, featuring another 'Origins' story:

    1347345_ful.jpg

SONIC SUPER SIZED DIGEST #8: (W) Ian Flynn (A) Lamar Wells & Various (CA) Rafa Knight

Sonic Super Digest returns with an all-new story continuing the hit Sonic Origins mini-feature! Sonic the Hedgehog has many friends, but few are as brave, stalwart or had as much growth as Antoine D'Coolette! Learn how this skittish swordsman crossed paths with Sonic and the Freedom Fighters as only Sonic Super Digest can tell it! Then, continue the fun with more classic adventures from the Sonic comic library! Featuring an all-new CG cover from Sonic superstar Rafa Knight!

So it looks as though these 'Origin' stories will focus on the FFs for now, but at least it should give us some more insight into the new continuity's early days.

  21. It's been a while since I last did these, but here are the covers and solicitation for Issue #66: The finale to 'The Great Chaos Caper'!

    1347349_ful.jpg1347348_ful.jpg

SONIC UNIVERSE #66: (W) Ian Flynn (A) Jim Amash & Various (CA) Brent McCarthy

The Great Chaos Caper, Part Four: This is it - the frantic finale full of flustered fighters! In one corner, trying to complete his mission and save the world, is Knuckles! In the other corner, a titanic Dark Gaia beast! The Chaotix and Hooligans continue to tussle, a wounded spirit and Chaos Emerald are being tossed about, and the flood waters are pouring in! Don't miss this crazy conclusion to the 'Great Chaos Caper!'

Sounds interesting, especially that bit about 'flood waters' the 'wounded spirit' and the Chaos Emerald. A possible connection to 'Waves of Change', anyone?
